Yuko, a film-documentary by NISMED TV, won the “Best Screenplay Award” in the Talkback and Awarding Ceremony of the 9th Indie-Siyensya Filmmaking Competition held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on December 3, 2025. This film is the official entry of the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) to Indie-Siyensya. This year’s event, organized by the Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), carried the theme "Halik sa Lupa", celebrating science-themed films that make complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging to the Filipino public.
Out of over 120 entries nationwide, Yuko stood out for its creative storytelling and compelling narrative. The film explores the hidden power of soil in sustaining life, preserving history, and combating climate change, taking viewers on a journey from the dusty craters of Mars to the fertile lands of the Earth. Through its screenplay, Yuko effectively weaves together these themes, demonstrating the potential of film as a tool for science communication.
The award was accepted by the NISMED TV team, including Mr. Renz Salas (production coordinator and writer), Mr. Ralph Ian Robles (editor and videographer), Ms. Princes Raymunda Gatan (production assistant and writer), Ms. Monique Anne Tizon (production assistant and writer), and Mr. Roderick Gonzales (videographer). Also present were Dr. Sheryl Lyn Monterola (Director), Dr. Monalisa Sasing (Deputy Director for Research and Extension), Ms. Cerilina Maramag (Deputy Director for Administration), Ms. Angelie Domingo (Administrative Officer), and Mr. Anthony Guiller Urbano, a featured expert in the film.
The 9th Indie-Siyensya Talkback and Awarding Ceremony also featured panel discussions with filmmakers and scientists, allowing audiences to reflect on the films’ messages and the role of science in society. Yuko’s recognition highlights the power of science communication through film and its ability to engage communities in meaningful conversations about the environment.
