| The first Filipino film with audio description in cinemas |
Five NISMED staff watched the award-winning movie Firefly, the first Filipino film to use audio description, at SM Megamall Cinema 2 on 3 December 2025. Sponsored by the National Council on Disability Affairs and Project Audio Description Awareness Movement (Project ADAM), the event aimed to promote media accessibility and inclusive storytelling that would allow persons with disabilities (PWDs) to access these forms of entertainment.
Prior to the free film screening, the organizers first introduced what audio description is. They explained that audio description is a voice-over that describes the scenes of the movie that blind people will not be able to understand if not verbally communicated. After the screening of the movie, an open forum was conducted to discuss the vital role of communication, education, and governance in fostering disability inclusion.
Firefly, which stars Dingdong Dantes, Max Collins, Alessandra de Rossi, Miguel Tanfelix, Ysabel Ortega, Cherry Pie Picache, Epy Quizon, Yayo Aguila, and child actor Euwenn Mikaell, was written by Angeli Atienza and directed by Zig Dulay. Produced by GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs, the movie won Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Child Performer at the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival and earned seven nominations in other categories.
