The Schools Division Office of Nueva Vizcaya, in partnership with the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED), conducted a training on International Large-Scale Assessments from 29 to 31 January 2025.
The three-day activity strengthened participants’ understanding of the PISA and SEA- PLM assessment frameworks and their application to classroom assessment. Discussions focused on mathematical, scientific, reading, and creative-thinking literacy, emphasizing students’ ability to reason, solve real-world problems, interpret information, and communicate their ideas.
Participants joined parallel workshops in elementary and secondary mathematics, science, and English. They developed contextualized PISA- and SEA-PLM-like assessment tasks, scoring guides, and revised outputs based on peer and facilitator feedback. Sessions on test validity and reliability were also conducted to help ensure that the assessment tasks accurately and consistently measure the intended
competencies.
The training highlighted the idea that preparing learners for international assessments is not merely about improving rankings. More importantly, it is about developing students who can apply knowledge critically, creatively, and meaningfully in real-life situations.
