On 8 May 2026, the UP NISMED GeoGebra Education Program (GeoGebraEd) was officially recognized as the recipient of the 2026 Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Programang Pang-Ekstensiyon. This prestigious award honors the program's significant contributions to the University of the Philippines' extension mandate through its commitment to research-informed, equitable, and context-responsive digital mathematics teaching.
The GeoGebraEd Team is primarily composed of members of the High School Mathematics Group, namely Dr. Erlina R. Ronda, Dr. Allan M. Canonigo, Ms. Haidee P. Rosete, Mr. Guillermo P. Bautista, Jr., Ms. Abigail B. Gonzales, Ms. Mary Grace R. Macacua, and Mr. Joshua P. Salazar, along with Ms. Beatrice Faye M. Mataac and Ms. Stella Maris P. Lumayad from other academic groups.
The GeoGebraEd Program is a sustained extension program of the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED). It was designed to address persistent challenges in Philippine mathematics education, such as declining learner proficiency and limited access to sustained teacher professional development. Rather than a one-off technology workshop, the program provides a coherent framework that integrates sustained teacher training, curriculum-aligned and freely accessible digital resources, community-based inquiry, and research-informed pedagogical guidance.
A core pillar of the program's advocacy is its equity-oriented design. It demonstrates that meaningful digital mathematics instruction is possible even in resource-constrained public school classrooms by leveraging shared displays and whole-class discussions rather than requiring one-to-one device access. Over the years, GeoGebraEd has reached hundreds of public school mathematics teachers nationwide through partnerships with DepEd Schools Division Offices and schools.
As it celebrates this milestone, GeoGebraEd continues to look forward. The program has institutionalized its model through localized initiatives. In addition, plans are underway for The GeoGebra Enthusiasts, a quarterly practitioner journal that will document classroom innovations and help build a wider community of practice.
By bridging academic expertise with community needs, the UP NISMED GeoGebra Education Program exemplifies the best of extension work by democratizing quality education and helping ensure that every Filipino learner has the tools to excel in a digital world.
